  • June 26, 2007 Issue HOME ALONE: Marketing Away from the office
    By Dan Guttman, MBA

Marketing tasks are not only possible away from the office but some can even be more effective and fun without the typical workday distractions, as long as you have a plan and some basic tools.

Remote PC Connection. You can access to your office PC via such programs as "Go to my PC" or "Webex." There are several commercially available software programs that allow you to access your office PC securely with passwords. Essentially, you are capturing your office screen with your remote PC and can work with email, documents and databases just as you would normally. So if you are at the beach or just playing hooky--your clients will never know.

Contact Management Software. Only about 40% of law firms have Contact Management Software. These programs allow you to keep track of thousands of client and prospect contacts without worrying about the premature onset of Alzheimer's. Never forget a promise, lunch or a deadline again. They are extremely helpful from marketing at home.

Assuming you have a desk, PC and phone along with the right software, you can easily make the transition from home to office. The beauty of being home is that, unless you have an uncontrollably barking Schnauzer or unfed baby, it is the quiet venue to make those marketing calls and to send those emails you have been meaning to do.

Always make sure you have a plan as to what your want to accomplish at home (e.g. 10 new client calls) so that it doesn't become an excuse for raiding the refrigerator or catching up on your soap operas (not that there is anything wrong with that). BUY-LAWS CONFERENCE DIRECTORS
