September 18, 2007 Issue Trade Associations: Group Therapy for Law Firm Growth By Daniel Guttman
There are 25,000 national associations in the United States and about 5,000 business associations. And that's not including the local and regional ones. All of them are in need of lawyers and sage business and legal advice. The rewards, both psychic and in terms of new clients, can be multifarious.
Trade associations by definition are comprised of businesses or business people for the purpose of promoting a particular industry. They come in a mind boggling variety of shapes and sizes ranging from fewer than fifty members to hundreds of thousands. Many have headquarters in the Washington area where they can employ their lobbying efforts on behalf of their constituent members. And they love lawyers as members and on the Board of Directors.
Name any interest, avocation or legal practice you have and I would bet there is an association closely related to it. Many of these associations need counsel among other things to avoid anti-trust issues such as price fixing (which can be very tempting to assess when 200 widget manufacturers get together for closed door meetings). If you were on their board you would be a perfect choice to head a legal committee. After you have been there a while it is only natural that some member moguls would want you to handle some of their corporate legal work once they had seen your cogent advice up close.
Our Upcoming Buy-Laws Conference on Friday, October 5 will have a whole section devoted to Trade Associations - how to choose them and how to get the most out of them. We would strongly suggest you attend and register now.
Trade Association Challenge In the meantime, we are offering you a challenge. Contact me at dan@bmsgo.com or 732.283.8700 an interest or avocation you have (from Tiddlywinks to Chess to Big Oil) and we will find you at least one association you should consider joining. And unlike Groucho Marx, you should join any association that would have you as a member. BUY-LAWS CONFERENCE FACULTY Intrigued? Want to know more? Please contact us.
